The Most Awesome Movies That Never Got Made

For every big hit film that comes out, there are probably dozens of ideas that never took off in the filmmaking world. Some movies failed because their stars didn’t want to go through the grueling editing process, others because of some unforeseen plot twist. Whatever the case, here are some good examples of promising movies that never made it;

The Martian

This is one of those movies we all thought would be the next “Star Wars”. Ridley Scott wanted to make a prequel about an astronaut who had to survive on Mars. Unfortunately, this project wasn’t as successful as he hoped, and eventually died. In the end, what killed the project for him was the constant budget cuts that kept coming from the studio.

Serenity

The original series of Firefly was going to turn into a spin-off based around the crew of Serenity. I don’t know if this is true or not, but it could be why Joss Whedon’s latest venture was such a disappointment. If you haven’t seen it yet, start watching at the beginning so you can see how great the pilot episode is.

Jurassic Park 4

At one point Steven Spielberg was planning to continue the Jurassic Park franchise with four more sequels. However, when the first film became a blockbuster success, the director decided not to pursue any further films that bore the dinosaur title. Instead, he went on to do other things. Killer Klowns From Outer Space

One of my favorite horror flicks of all time, The Empire Strikes Back features two killer clowns called the Blooper Brothers that get loose in a small town during the Halloween season. With help from a young girl, the duo tries to kill anyone who gets in their way. This film has become a cult classic, which is kind of odd considering it never received a proper release on home video.

The Bottom Line

Considering that real money is to be used, the potential for failure still exists. As long as somebody wants a movie made badly enough, someone will decide to fund its production. Sometimes they don’t even know what they would do with it after the filming ends. But, whether it’s a $100 million epic about superheroes or a tiny indie comedy in your living room, anything’s possible!
